Goal: The student will
examine the meaning of sin and the importance of personal worth.
(Use of
Authority. Jt.)
Sin
(Please check
"
People of The World" Jt)
Origin: Unexplainable. Lucifer's love of
self. Love of self is underlying principle of all sin.
Development: We are born under Satan's
control unless we give ourselves to Christ. ". . .all that is in the world .
. . comes not from the Father, but from the world" (1 John 2:16).
Definition of sin
- Iniquity: Crooked or bent state humans
are born in. Condition of sinfulness. Isaiah 53:6 "All we like sheep have
gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath
laid on him the iniquity of us all."
1. Everyone has gone astray.
2. Iniquity laid on Christ: Self
centeredness was put on the Sin Bearer.
3. Jesus condemned iniquity on the
cross.
4. We are not condemned if we are in
Christ. Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those
who are in Jesus Christ."
- Sin: Missing the mark
(at Sinai; and in Heaven, too. Jt.) Failing to
measure up to God's ideal of selfless love. All are sinners because born
spiritually bent.
- Transgression: Deliberate violation of
law or willful act of disobedience. We have a knowledge of what the law
requires but still disobey. What is the law? God
gives the law for us to fully realize our condition because we are unable
to recognize it ourselves.
Sequiera Chapter 2, "God's Redemptive Love"
There is good news. Salvation is grounded
in God's love.
Types of love
1. Philos: Brotherly love
2. Eros: Love between sexes
3. Caritas: cross between eros and
agape.
4. Agape: Untainted by selfish motive.
Use in Bible to represent God's love. It is complete contradiction of
human love in three ways
1. Human love is conditional: We do
not love the unlovely
2. Human love is changeable and
unreliable.
3. Human love is self-seeking
Diagram types of love from Sequiera p.
25: Eros is Man God (salvation by works), Caritas man God (faith + works),
agape is man God (salvation by faith alone)
Ask the question in sports: Are motives
self-sacrificing (from Christ) or selfish (from Satan)? Is agape the type
seen?
Theory W (Lockhart, 1996)
Every human has equal worth in God's
sight. Worth of human is constant throughout one's existence. It cannot be
manipulated. If a person recognizes this worth they will have a high level
of personal security.
Barbara Waite
- Self accepting: Value and feel good
about themselves in spite of their shortcomings.
- Knowing one's life has unconditional
meaning
- Trusting one's life has inherent
worth
- Valuing uniqueness
- Self esteem: Feel good based on
strengths and accomplishments.
- Appearance
- Competence and talents
- Achievements
- Prestige, status, authority
- Self acceptance is unconditional,
self-esteem is not. Agape love is unconditional.
Theory W hypothesizes that individual who
is personally secure will function very effectively as leader.
Is this a true statement?
Sometimes people are too nice and don't take leadership.
Personal points
- Problem with athletes today is that
they base their worth on achievements (i.e. strikes, high salaries)
- Sports produces a reward for the
successful. Athletes tend to base their worth on achieving these goals.
When they win it creates a false sense of security.
- Many successful people and athletes are
very insecure because they seek extrinsic rewards. This is what drives
them to be successful. What they lack is the personal security the God's
love offers.
- A successful person that recognizes
their inherent worth are quality leaders. They are not pompous about their
money or tied up in their accomplishments. They love other people and are
very secure.
Summary
- Sin is unexplainable but nevertheless
developed on Earth.
- When we transgress we deliberately
disobey God's law. However, we are able to be forgiven because Christ died
on the cross as our Sin Bearer.
- God shows Agape love for use.
- Because of this unconditional love,
each person's worth is unconditional.
